Hamad International Airport (DOH) sits on the edge of Doha, and the metro reaches the old town in 20 to 25 minutes. Most Western passports need no visa to leave. If you'd rather stay put, the Oryx Airport Hotel is inside the transit area, so you can sleep without passing immigration.

Short answer
Yes, you can leave Hamad airport if your passport is visa-free for Qatar (UK, US, EU and Schengen, Canada, Australia and others, about 100 nationalities in all) and you have at least 5 hours. Other passports, including Indian, need a transit visa, a Hayya e-visa or a Discover Qatar hotel booking to leave. Otherwise stay airside, which needs no visa for up to 24 hours. The Oryx Airport Hotel and Sleepover pods are both airside.
Is a Doha layover worth leaving the airport for?
Usually, yes. Hamad International Airport (DOH) sits on the edge of the city, the metro runs from the terminal into the centre, and the best of old Doha (Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art and the Corniche) sits within a short walk of one station. Little of a Doha layover goes on getting into town.
Two things decide it: your passport and your hours.
- Visa-free passports (UK, US, EU and Schengen, Canada, Australia and others, about 100 nationalities in all) need no visa to leave the airport. See visa and transit rules for the details by passport.
- Other passports, including Indian, need something arranged before immigration: a transit visa through Discover Qatar (Qatar Airways or code-share tickets only), a Hayya e-visa, or a hotel booked through Discover Qatar.
- Time: plan on at least 5 hours between flights. Allow about an hour from landing to the metro and half an hour each way into town, and be back at the airport 90 minutes before you fly. That’s enough when you already hold your onward boarding pass and have no bag to check. A 5-hour layover leaves about 1.5 hours in town, and 6 hours about 2.5.
The fastest plan for a short layover
- Clear immigration and follow signs for the metro (Red Line, HIA T1 station).
- Ride to Msheireb, about 20 to 25 minutes. Every train from the airport heads into the city. On the way back, board a Red Line train marked HIA T1, because some trains go to Al Wakra instead.
- Walk to Souq Waqif, then on to the Museum of Islamic Art park and the start of the Corniche.
- Head back from Msheireb with time to spare.

Would you rather someone else handled the timing? Transit tours collect you at the airport and bring you back. Discover Qatar’s 3-hour city tour needs a 6-hour layover, and the 4-hour tours sold on GetYourGuide (opens in a new tab) and Viator (opens in a new tab) need about 7 hours.
Our 6, 8, 12 and 24-hour itineraries fill in the detail and compare the tours, and getting into the city covers taxis, Uber and private transfers if you’d rather not take the metro.
Watch the calendar
- Fridays: the metro doesn’t start until 9am, many shops pause for Friday prayers, and the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum don’t open until 1:30pm.
- Museum closures: the Museum of Islamic Art is closed on Wednesdays and the National Museum of Qatar on Tuesdays.
- Summer heat: from June to September daytime highs reach about 40°C with heavy humidity. Plan indoor stops in the middle of the day and save walking for the evening.
- Ramadan: don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours.
Staying in the airport instead
If your layover is short, or you’d need a visa to leave, you can sleep at Hamad without passing immigration.
- Oryx Airport Hotel: the only hotel inside the terminal, in the transit area near the Lamp Bear. Rooms cost about US$320 to 390 a night on Booking.com (seen in October 2026).
- Sleepover pods: three pod lounges airside. Booking sites sell the South Node in 6, 8 and 10-hour blocks, from about US$99 for a single pod for 6 hours.
- Quiet rooms: free, with reclining chairs.
- Lounges: Qatar Airways and Al Maha lounges sell entry, and Priority Pass listed the Al Maha lounges again in October 2026.

Long connection on Qatar Airways?
Before you book anything, check whether your fare includes a free transit hotel. Qatar Airways offers one on some fares when your connection is 8 to 24 hours and none of its flights would get you onward within 8 hours of landing, with transfers included. For a planned stop of 12 to 96 hours, its stopover packages start from about US$14 a person a night, sharing a double room. Both are explained on the visa and transit page.
